Seminar 4: Who Said Romance Was Dead?
Tuesday 16 November, 1.45 pm, Lecture Room 23.
Now that we’ve covered the background theory, it’s time for some collaborative research. Our aim for this week is to see whether Dudman’s insights into tense in English can be extended to give a better understanding of the verb systems of Romance languages.
The two of us should (with sufficient preparation) be in a position to make some introductory remarks about French, Italian and Spanish before letting others present their own observations. Given that we have an Occitan specialist on board as well, we should end up with a reasonably comprehensive coverage of “Italo-Western” languages, so any thoughts about Romanian (as being significantly different) would be especially welcome.
